Welcome to Queenstown! We will collect you from the Airport or your accommodation and meet all together at 1pm. After a brief induction you can check out your Goodie Bags then we’re off to explore the incredible Glenorchy Road. 42km of breathtaking scenery. We'll stop often and start filling those SD cards. We will return via Moke Lake if conditions are right or spend some time on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
Flying high above the Southern Alps and into Queenstown will take your breath away. It's quite possibly the most incredible flight you will ever have been on.
There's such a great vibe here. It's the adventure capital of the world, surrounded by spectacular mountains and scenery, has wonderful places to eat is central to some of the very best photography locations in the South Island.
It's an early start today as we shoot sunrise on the shores of Lake Wakatipu before heading to the airport for our flight to Milford Sound. Have your cameras ready as this is a spectacular flight that lands on the very famous Milford Sound runway. Located in Fiordland National Park its known as the 8th wonder of the world. We're going cruising in the sound before flying back to Queenstown.
Then it's off toWanaka via Arrowtown, Lake Hayes and the Crown Range. We are staying in Wanaka tonight so after sunset at the famous Wanaka Tree we'll take you through an editing tutorial.
If you've never been to Fiordland, prepare to be speechless with the sheer beauty of it. Carved by glaciers over 100,000 years it boasts incredible
mountains and vast valleys, the scale of which is almost beyond
comprehension. Where annual rainfall is measured in metres, rainforests hug mountains and flora and fauna are completely unique to the area.
Arrowtown is a quirky little Historic Gold Mining Town that when surrounded by snow capped mountains is a pure delight.
After staying the night in beautiful Wanaka we will capture sunrise on the shores of the Lake before enjoying a hearty breakfast. Then it's time to make our way over the Haast Pass. We will visit the The Gates of Haast, and Thunder Creek Falls on our way to Fox Glacier. Sunset will be here and there will be an opportunity to shoot Astro if conditions are clear.
We're staying in Fox for two nights.
Wanaka - home to the famous Wanaka Tree is one of the most picturesque towns in the South Island. It's a small township flanked by a magnificent lake and giant mountains. It's the gateway to Mt Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of Glaciers, Beech Forests and Alpine Lakes.
The Haast Pass is a spectacular drive and at 562 metres above sea level is the lowest of the Southern passes. It's the saddle between the Makarora and Haast Rivers and is lined with Waterfalls and Beech Forests
There's a couple of nice compositions here so after sunrise at Lake Matheson we will have breakfast with one of the best West Coast views of Mount Cook there is.
Just down the road is Franz Josef Glacier. There are a number of great locations to photograph in this area including lake and coastal spots that we will be choosing from depending on conditions. Sunset will likely be at the gorgeous Lake Mapourika.
Lake Matheson is one of the most gorgeous and reliable mirrored locations in New Zealand. Fox Glacier is known as one of the most accessible glaciers in the world. It's one of only a few that are located close to both a rainforest and an ocean.
Only 23 km down the road is Franz Josef / Waiau. Both Glaciers are located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park
After sunrise at Lake Matheson we will have breakfast with one of the best West Coast Views of Mount Cook there is. We will then hit the road and make our way to Twizel.
In the depths of winter Twizel is spectacular. It often has a hoar frost and turns the landscape into something quite magical Twizel is a very central location with mountains, lakes and rivers and of course those famous canals.
Sunrise will be capturing the beautiful Ben Ohau Range before we grab some breakfast and head into Aoraki/Mt Cook.
You're in for an extra special treat today. The road to Mt Cook is spectacular and when you travel it for the first time it leaves you speechless with it's sheer beauty. We will call in to Peters Lookout and make a few more stops on the way in. We will have the day exploring and will walk into Hooker Lake. It's an easy, mostly flat 1.15 hours each way. You will want to stop every few minutes to take those epic Mt Cook images.
All going well with weather conditions we will take the opportunity to shoot some Astro on the drive back. The skies here are quite incredible at night with the core of the MilkyWay easily visible.
Aoraki/Mt Cook is the highest mountain in New Zealand at 3724 metres but Mt Cook National Park has 19 peaks over 3000 metres in total.
Be prepared to see the incredible water colour of Lake Pukaki. The glacial feed to the lake gives it a stunning powder blue colour which is created by glacial flour, the extremely fine ground rock particles from the glaciers.
The walk into Hooker Lake takes you over three very safe swing bridges, perfect for photography.
It's an exciting start to the day today as we hit the skies for a sunrise flight around Mt Cook National Park. This includes a Glacier Landing so make sure your batteries are fully charged as they're going to get a workout today!
We will enjoy breakfast before hitting the road for the last time making our way back Queenstown. We'll go via Cromwell and Lake Dunstan and expect to have you back in Queenstown mid afternoon. We advise you to book accommodation and stay in Queenstown tonight as its winter. Roads can close and occasionally there are delays. We will drop you at your accommodation. No doubt you will be tired but happy. Your SD cards will be full and you will have made friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
Cromwell is home to the famous Cromnut (we'll preorder as you don't want to miss out on trying one of these). The Gibbston Valley boasts many wonderful wineries. We can stop here if you want to stock up.
Lake Wakatipu is the third largest lake in New Zealand and at 84 km long, it’s also the longest. It's name comes from Maori, Whakatipu wai-māori, which could mean “growing bay” or “bay of spirits”, depending on the translation of the historic Southern dialect.
